Job Purpose

In collaboration with Gallaudet University Center for Continuing Studies, the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center and other Gallaudet University departments, initiate, plan, organize and implement projects across the region in support of Gallaudet University's strategic plan, including conferences, training, and courses to meet the needs of deaf and hard of hearing people, their families, and professionals who serve them.   Coordinate identified Southwest Region programs through a complete development cycle from project definition to development, dissemination, and evaluation. Coordinate the process for determining project goals, budgets, and time lines, in collaboration with other stakeholders.  Prepare project communications including regular status updates.

Description of Duties and Tasks

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Assist the director of the Regional Center in developing a long range strategic plan in collaboration Gallaudet University’s Center for Continuing, the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center and other Gallaudet University Departments to serve the Southwestern states; by developing a communication network of professionals in the field of deaf education, developing a network of educational services to deaf and hard of hearing students, and developing a network of professionals in deaf and hard of hearing related fields. Initiates and maintains contacts and resources from identified states within the region; actively pursues collaborative opportunities. Identify and respond to training needs and requests throughout the region including identifying presenters, coordinating logistics, recommending budget guidelines for Regional Center sponsored activities.
  2. Utilizes technology in all aspects of the work, including the development and maintenance of networks; e.g. websites, online communities, video conferencing.
  3. Remain abreast of current trends and issues in education, rehabilitation, culture, and linguistics as they relate to deaf and hard of hearing individuals; including best practices and promising practices in the education of deaf and hard of hearing students of all age levels, evaluation of training, instructional systems design, performance improvement, relevant technology, principles of adult learning, and effective practices in staff development. Provides input and review on deaf education efforts whenever necessary.
  4. Develop professional networks across the region.  Actively pursue collaborative opportunities, identify and respond to training needs and requests throughout the region.  Be proactive in creating new opportunities for Gallaudet University to have an impact in the region. Handle multiple projects simultaneously. Support the GURC’s public relations role, representing Gallaudet University and providing information about the academic, service and support programs at the University as well as all training, publications, outreach, partnership, enrollment, and recruitment initiatives.  Assist with other GURC activities as assigned.
  5. Assist with traveling (cities in Texas and the rest of 7 states in the region), plans, organization and implementation of workshops, conferences and seminars. Handle significant issues and projects on behalf of the Regional Center by organizing and executing the work involved, dealing extensively with key individuals on a local, state, regional, and national level. Provides direct services to constituents, including training and technical assistance related to professional development and lifelong learning needs of deaf and hard of hearing people, their families, and the professionals who work with them, through workshops, training programs, conferences, extension courses, professional studies courses, online classes, cultural arts and special events.
  6. Assist with the efforts of the Gallaudet University Regional Center to meet contract objectives. Assist in the preparation of reports and activity documentation.
  7. Supports the Regional Center’s public relations role by regularly sharing information about all aspects of Gallaudet University programs and initiatives with contacts throughout the region. Remains well informed about the academic, service and support programs at Gallaudet University and all training, publications, outreach, partnership, enrollment, and recruitment initiatives underway.
  8. Supports the mission of Gallaudet University and Austin Community College, as well as the unique partnership represented by the role and function of the Regional Center. Demonstrates thorough knowledge of the University and the College.
  9. Serve on institutional committees. Serve on local, state, regional or national committees and perform other duties as assigned.

  • Maintaining an established work schedule, including some evenings and weekends..

  • Effectively using organizational and planning skills with attention to detail and follow through.

Computer Skills

Required

  •  Demonstrated proficiency an intermediate level using standard office software programs.

Physical Requirements

  • Occasional lifting of objects up to 10 pounds

Work Experience

Required

  •  Two years of work experience in deaf education, rehabilitation or related field.

Preferred

  • Two years of program coordination experience in deaf education, rehabilitation or related field.

Education

Required

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution

Preferred

  • Master's degree from an accredited institution in deaf education, rehabilitation or related field.

  • This position is grant funded on an annual basis by Gallaudet University’s College of Professional Studies and Outreach.  Gallaudet University Regional Center serves the Southwest states of Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Utah. Under general supervision of the Director of Gallaudet University Regional Center, to develop collaborative relationships with educational programs and professionals in deaf and hard of hearing related fields throughout the Southwestern region in keeping with the mission of the Regional Center.The Gallaudet Regional Center has been located at Austin Community College – Riverside Campus. This position commences as soon as possible and the contract period lasts through September 30, 2011. This is a specially funded program and continuance in this position beyond September 30, 2011will be dependant upon the satisfactory performance and the availability of federal funding for this program. Funding is received from Gallaudet.
