Course Requirements

  • This course is a Blackboard course (detailed instructions for all assignments are on Blackboard). 
  • In this course, you will be studying from the textbook, taking 4 exams at the Testing Center, writing 6 summaries, and writing 2 one-page Annotated Bibliographies and 2 film summaries which you will send me via the Digital Dropbox.  All exams are taken at any of the ACC Testing Centers: Northridge, Rio Grande, Cypress, Eastview, Riverside, South Austin Campus, Pinnacle, Round Rock, San Marcos and Fredericksburg.

The textbook is also available through www.ichapters.comat a reduced price per chapter. You might also look into renting the textbook for a reduced price. There are no copies available in the library.

SECTION 1:  You will be tested on these chapters in EXAM 1.  DEADLINE: June 3  (Fri.)

·  Chapter 1:  Meet some Real Archaeologists

·  Chapter 2:  The Structure of Archaeological Inquiry

·  Chapter 3:  Doing Fieldwork: Surveying for Archaeological Sites

·  Chapter 4:  Doing Fieldwork: Why Archaeologists Dig Square Holes

 

 

SECTION 2:  You will be tested on these chapters in EXAM 2.  DEADLINE:  June 15 (Wed.)

You receive 10 bonus points if you submit your 6 SUMMARIES by this date.

·  Chapter 5:  Geoarchaeology and site formation processes

·  Chapter 6:  Chronology Building: How to Get a Date

·  Chapter 7:  The Dimensions of Archaeology: Time, Space, and Form

·  Chapter 8:  Taphonomy, Experimental Archaeology, and Ethnoarchaeology

 

 

 

SECTION 3:  You will be tested on these chapters in EXAM 3.  DEADLINE:  June 24  (Fri.)

This is the last day to submit 6 SUMMARIES (remember you can submit them early and get bonus points).

You receive 10 bonus points if you submit your annotated bibliographies by this date.

·  Chapter 10: Bioarchaeological Approaches to the Past

·  Chapter 11: Reconstructing Social and Political Systems of the Past

·  Chapter 12: The Archaeology of Mind

 

 

SECTION 4:  You will be tested on these chapters in EXAM 4.  DEADLINE: June 29 (Wed.)

This is also the last day to submit ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHIES and FILM SUMMARIES.

Student Learning Outcomes/Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, the student:
- Will be able to describe what anthropology and anthropological archaeology are.
- Will understand the methods and theories of anthropological archaeology.
- Will understand the processes that affect the archaeological record.
- Will understand cultural diversity and how and why cultures change through time.
