Course Description

Introduction to Communication is the study of the theories and practice of oral communication to promote communication competence in interaction with others. Skills: E (SPCH 1311)  ACC Course Descriptions

 

This is a distance learning version of the standard Introduction to Communicationcourse.  This course requires self-discipline, ability to use email, ability to navigate the e-learning platform Blackboard, and knowledge of personal computers and the Internet.  This course uses internet-based instruction to create an alternative to traditional college course formats. 

  • Two on-campus oral presentations required
  • Oral presentations held on Pinnacle Campus 6-9 pm: see Course Calendar
  • Assignments submitted as MSWord 6/7-compatible documents (doc, docx, odt, or rtf)
  • Assignments submitted as attachments to ACCmail
  • 70% score required on assignments to participate in oral presentations
  • Students must participate in all oral presentations to pass this course
  • There is no make-up for a missed oral presentation
  • Testing completed online in Blackboard at your own pace, but there are strict deadlines
  • Students are expected to read ACCmail daily for announcements and assignment feedback

Course Skill Levels

In accordance with H.B. 2183, students who enroll for ACC Speech courses are expected to demonstrate competent English speaking and listening skills.  "Competence in speaking is the ability to communicate orally in clear, coherent, and persuasive language appropriate to purpose, occasion, and audience and listening at the college level means the ability to analyze and interpret various forms of spoken communication" (ACC Catalog).

Course Objectives

After taking this course, you should demonstrate an increased understanding of:

  1. The options and alternatives for action in a wide variety of interpersonal situations
  2. Your communication preferences and appreciation for the differences of others
  3. The ethical dimensions of interpersonal, small group, & public communication
  4. The competencies related to communicating with individuals from other cultures
  5. The importance of verbal and nonverbal communication in successful interaction
  6. How the nature of communication promotes defensive or supportive climates
  7. The role of communication in determining the quality of interpersonal relationships
  8. The nature of group problem-solving & role behavior flexibility
  9. Public speaking competencies & effective delivery style in informal or formal situations
  10. Communication competence and an ability to assess the appropriateness and effectiveness of strategies in various communication situations.

Final grades are based on Total Points Earned.

A = 900-1000

B = 800-899

C = 700-799

D = 600-699

F = 599 and below

 

Continued enrollment in this section of SPCH 1311 constitutes
explicit acceptance

Online Test Policy

  1. Late tests:
  2. Late tests are NOT “locked” and can be completed even if a score of zero shows.
  3. As soon as you complete a late test, email Dr. Lyn for a “late test reset”.
  4. Late tests are reset with a 20% fee if completed within one week of the due date.
  5. Late tests maintain a score of zero if not completed within one week of the due date.
  6. Interrupted tests:
  7. A “test interruption” (pencil & paper icon) occurs when the computer connection fails.
  8. Immediately email Dr. Lyn to request an “interrupted test reset.
  9. Interrupted tests are reset with a 20% fee if completed within one week of the due date.
  10. Interrupted tests result in a score of zero if not completed within one week of due date.

 

 

Assignment Policy

  1. SUBMITassignments as attachments to email (doc, docx, rtf, odt): Assignments in body of email not accepted.

  20. The following must earn 70% “quality of work” score to participate in presentations.

Presentation Lab Policies

  1. Oral Presentations are held at Pinnacle Campus Room 402 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 p.m.
  2. Group Discussion Lab: The door opens at 5:30 pm and closes at 6:00 pm.
  3. If you arrive late, Wait outside the door and DO NOT KNOCK.
  4. You can speak with Dr. Lyn when we open the door to take a break.
  5. Informative Speech Lab: The door opens at 5:30 and closes at 6:00 pm.
  6. Sign-up for speaking order and test visual aids on the computer at 5:30 pm.
  7. If you arrive late, Wait outside the door and DO NOT KNOCK.
  8. You can speak with Dr. Lyn when we open the door to take a break.
  9. Arrive early: Give yourself time for traffic, accidents, getting lost, etc.
  10. There is no make-up for a missed oral presentation, regardless of reason.
  11. ACC excused absences are religious holy days or required military service confirmed prior to scheduled presentation date.
  12. Speaking order is decided on a first-come, first-served basis.
  13. Everyone is expected to stay until all speakers have finished or until 9:00 pm, whichever occurs first and leaving prior to the end of all speeches will result in zero points for the Informative speech, regardless of reason.
  14. Everyone is expected to give effective feedback to assigned speakers during that lab and will lose one-full grade for not providing effective feedback to assigned speakers, regardless of reason
  15. Sorry, but no children or guests permitted during the speech labs.
  16. Turn off cell phones, pagers, electronic devices when you enter the room. Lose one full grade for using cell phone during lab.
  17. Available electronic equipment: Dell PC with projector includes PowerPoint; CD drive and USB-drives.  Transparency overhead machine also available.
  18. Internet access may be available, but not guaranteed.

2.Withdrawals
a.I do NOTdrop students. 
b.If you wish to drop, submit the appropriate Course Withdrawal forms with ACC Admissions prior to the published deadline for withdrawals (see college calendar) or risk a final grade of F.
3.Incompletes
a.NOIncompletes for any reason. 
b.If you are unable to complete the course by the published semester end date, you will need to drop the course by the ACC deadline by submitting the appropriate Course Withdrawal forms with ACC Admissions. 

 


 

ACC SPEECH DEPARTMENT SPCH 1311 COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Speeches

  1. You are required to successfully complete two graded oral presentations.
  2. Your instructor may require more than two oral presentations.
  3. Present an oral presentation from two of the following three areas:
  4. Interpersonal Communication– e.g. employment interview, listening

      skills demonstration, positive communication climate demonstration

  1. Public Speaking– e.g. speech to inform, speech to persuade
  2. Small Group Discussion– e.g. task groups, learning groups, or

      problem-solving groups

Exams

  1. You are required to successfully complete two written and/or oral exams.

B.   Your instructor may require more than two exams.

Credit Options

  1. You are required to successfully complete any other projects as assigned.
  2. Your instructor may require assignments such as:
  3. Speech preparation assignments
  4. Analysis of written, videotaped, and live speaking performances
  5. Written self-assessments of own & other students’ performances
  6. Analysis of communication concepts in film or television programming
  7. Participation during in-class activities
  8. Papers or journal entries
  9. Group assignments
  10. Instructor’s choice

 

College Policies

Scholastic Dishonesty

Cheating and plagiarism are serious offenses in college. Cheating occurs when you copy answers from another student's test. Acts prohibited by the College for which discipline may be administered include scholastic dishonesty, e.g., cheating on an exam or quiz, plagiarizing, and unauthorized collaboration with another in preparing outside work. Academic work submitted by students shall be the result of their thought, research, or self-expression. Academic work is defined as, but not limited to, tests and quizzes, whether taken electronically or on paper; projects, either individual or group; classroom presentations; and homework. Consequences include:

  1. Forfeit ALL points for the work
  2. Incident is reported to the Dean of Student Services
  3. Risk failing the course

Students with Disabilities

Each ACC campus offers support services for students with documented physical or psychological disabilities. Students with disabilities must request reasonable accommodations through the Office for Students with Disabilities on the campus where they expect to take the majority of their classes.
