GENERAL INFORMATION

The class of 2012 will begin their clinical rotations on MONDAY, May 29, 2012.  Clinical days will include Monday (8 hrs), Wednesday (8 hrs) and Friday (4 hours) for a total of twenty (20) hours per week.  Please review the attached Friday schedule, as some of these days will require classroom or laboratory activities.

SEMESTER LENGTH

Eleven weeks:MAY 29 – AUG.8. Last day of clinic FRIDAY, AUG.03.

                                    COURSE  POLICIES  ( clinical)

Students may not perform portable exams unless they are accompanied by a

Qualified   radiographer.

Students may not perform radiographic exams in other clinical areas i.e.,

Outpatient  departments ,nursery ,etc. unless accompanied by a qualified radiographer.

Students may not perform surgical procedures unless they are directly supervised by a radiographer at all times.

Students may not observe or perform mammography procedures for any reason or circumstance.

A qualified radiographer must directly supervise any repeated image/exam.

A TLD, and a picture ID must be worn with the picture visible ,.while in the clinical facility.

Students shall not answer telephones.

Students must call their assigned clinical agency and my office if they are going to be absent or leave the clinical site.

 ATTENDANCE POLICY

This is a short semester and only two (2) absences may be taken without penalty.  Only two (2) Tardies may be taken, and no Tardies are allowed on Friday..There is no makeup time for clinic .Any make up time will have to be    done in the fall, to resolve your incomplete grade. If a student leaves a clinical site early an absence will be given for the entire day.

FILM   ANALYSIS SESSIONS

During this semester, two (2) film analysis sessions will be given.  These will

be COMPREHENSIVE exams.  Any procedure, position, or principle that has

been addressed in the past semesters may be included.  Each session will

consist of eight (8) stations for ten (10) minutes each.  NOTE:  If a film

analysis session is missed, a clinical absence will be deducted from the

allowed number and a grade of zero (0) will be given for that exam.  The film

analysis component comprises 30 percent  of the total clinical grade.

Film analysis dates:     1.   Fri. June 15    2.   Fri. July 06

EVALUATION (PROFESSIONAL SKILLS)

This component includes evaluation pertaining to areas of safety, motivation,

Communication and patient care skills. This semester one (1) evaluation will

be completed in early July.  (Students with deficiencies identified on this

evaluation may require a second one). This component comprises 20% of the

     total clinical grade.

NOTE: On the fridays students attend clinic from 7:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. they meet in the  classroom  for Senior Seminar from 1:00 p.m.-3:30p.m.On days when film analysis or filming labs occur, clinic attendance is excused (but credit is given).

COMPETENCIES (INITIAL AND RECHECK)

During this semester, students are expected to continue completing both

mandatory and elective exams/procedures which remain on the Clinical

Competency Record forms.  As a reminder, ALL exams areto be completed

on actual patients, and all 36 mandatory exams are to be completed at least

once , and  15 of the 32 elective exams are to be completed at least once, in

order to be eligible for program completion.  Those students having already

met the requirements will still be expected to complete EIGHT (8) recheck

exams as a minimum for this semester.  Those having not met requirements

will be expected to finish those, plus additional recheck exams to total eight

(8).The grade average of all challenges completed comprises 40 percent of

     the clinic grade

FILMING LABS

There will be TWO (2) required labs, which are designed to review L-

spine  radiography and  C-ARM  competency.  This component

comprises 10 percent  of the clinical grade.  NOTE: These labs are conducted

under  testing conditions—no books or notes will be allowed.  Each student

group is required to turn in two finished films for the projection/method

given.  Each group will have an assigned time to complete the lab and label

the finished films  with appropriate anatomical features. Students are required

to wear their own TLD and bring their lead markers.  Clinic time is used to

fulfill this requirement, therefore a clinical absence will be recorded as

well as a zero grade assigned for those not attending.

Last day to withdraw with “W” in the course is August 1, 2012.

**Students with disabilities: Students with disabilities must request reasonable accommodations through the Office for Students with Disabilities on the campus where they expect to take the majority of their classes, three weeks before the start of the semester.

**Academic Dishonesty:”Acts prohibited by the College for which discipline may be administered include scholastic dishonesty ,including but not limited to cheating on an exam or quiz, plagiarizing, and unauthorized collaboration with another  in preparing outside work. Academic work submitted by students shall be the result of their thought, research or self-expression. Academic work is defined as ,but not limited to tests, quizzes, whether taken electronically or on paper; projects, either individual or group; classroom presentations, and homework.

(http://www.austincc.edu/handbook/) The Radiology Program faculty may assess an academic penalty, such as assigning a zero on a quiz or exam, or the student may be removed from the course if scholastic dishonesty takes place.

**Academic Freedom: This concept is essential to the learning process. Students have the opportunity to examine and question the pertinent data and assumptions of a given discipline, guided by the evidence of scholarly research. the right to self-expression or to disagree carries with it  the responsibility to exercise appropriate restraint, and to show respect for the opinions of others.

  • Resources-Performs procedures using necessary supplies and in an optimum time frame. Use laboratory learning resources and time for maximum information acquisition.

  • Interpersonal-Participates in large and small groups in learning laboratories and class discussion, working with diverse cultural groups

  • Information-Acquires, evaluates, organizes and maintains information for future use in both didactic and clinical settings. Understands importance of verifying physician orders before beginning procedures.

  • Systems-Understands systems for accomplishing imaging procedures, and for evaluating the need for corrective actions when viewing images.

  • Technology-Selects and coordinates imaging equipment with imaging needs for a given anatomic part or pathology. Manipulates equipment in a safety-conscious manner.

  • Basic skills- Demonstrates good verbal, motor and computational skills.

  • Thinking skills- Employs creative and critical thinking skills in solving problems.

  • Personal qualities – Demonstrates responsibility, social skills, integrity,

SPECIAL FILMING LAB PROJECT:

Beginning June 7, lab time slot spaces are available for the filming segment of this required activity.  The project’s purpose will be to compare the capabilities of the new Computed Radiography system to the rare earth film-

screen imaging system.  The project has three separate components:

Lab #1:  Exposure – compare the manual technique needed for a diagnostic-quality film-screen image, to that required for a proper sensitivity

number on a CR image.  Due date:  June 24.

Lab #2:  Resolution – compare the number of lines pairs visualized on a film-screen image to that obtained on a CR image.  Due date:  July 8.

Lab #3:  Dose – using pocket dosimeters and the tissue-equivalent phantom, measure the skin entrance dose for a film-screen image compared to a CR image.  Due date:  July 22.

Each component will require the student’s presence in lab for filming (sign

in and out with faculty member) and retention of images in a file folder.  There will be a set of written objectives and response questions to turn in by the dates

given above.  There will be only two possible grades for each component:  100

or zero (0).  The three component grades will be averaged with the grades for the filming labs (see page 2) in the first 2 weeks, which collectively comprises

10 % of the clinic grade. Attendance at the filming labs is mandatory, since it is

conducted in lieu of clinic attendance, and missing the filming lab will be considered the same as missing a day in clinic.
